Severe Weather Information
EARLY WARNING SYSTEM
- Tornado Warning - Alert A three (3) minute solid siren sound.
- Public Announcement - Broadcasted Message
NOTICE: THERE IS NO LONGER ANY SIREN OTHER THAN FOR A TORNADO WARNING!
The warning system is designed to alert persons outside, not persons driving a motor vehicle or who
are inside their homes. The sirens will be sounded at the earliest time possible at the event of a Tornado
Warning. *The siren is tested around noon every Monday weather permitting.
SIREN POLICY CHANGE
Labette County Emergency Management is working with cities within the county to adopt a unified siren policy.
This would enable citizens who may be in a nearby city shopping or visiting with friends and family to know what
they need to do when they hear a siren. The City of Oswego agreed at the March Council Meeting to adopt this policy.
This policy will eliminate all sirens previously used in Oswego except for the Tornado Warning. The Tornado Watch,
All Clear and Fire Sirens will no longer be sounded so that citizens will know if you hear a siren other than during the
regular testing time you NEED TO TAKE COVER! In addition Oswego will begin using the TORNADO SIREN during their
regular TESTING time. In the past the siren tone that was tested was the fire siren. Testing is done every Monday
around noon, however, this testing is only done when the weather is clear.
COMMUNITY SAFE ROOMS

INSTALLING A STORM SHELTER
Citizens who are considering installing a storm shelter will need to obtain a building permit.
Applications are available at the City Office at 703 5th Street. Although there is no charge for the permits
the application must be submitted and approved prior to work beginning.
Storm shelters installed inside the homes may or may not require a permit. However, it is still important to
contact the City Office to verify whether you need a permit and to give Emergency Personnel information that
you are installing a shelter. In the event of a disaster rescue crews will know where they may need to check for
persons trapped inside a shelter.
EMERGENCY PREPARDNESS PLAN
In order to be prepared for an emergency you need to have a plan! For help on putting together a Disaster Plan and/or
a Disaster Supply Kit check out this link. DON'T WAIT FOR A DISASTER TO HAPPEN...HAVE A PLAN!
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE/ WEATHER RADIOS/ ALERTS
Citizens need to stay informed when severe weather is threatening and should not depend only on the warning
siren to know when to take cover. Your local television and radio stations can provide severe weather information
from the National Weather Service for our area.
Weather radios or personal warnings such as text alerts are also another reliable way to monitor a weather
system. NOAA weather radios are designed to sit silently on a shelf in your home; they will only emit an audible
alarm if your area is identified to be in a potentially dangerous area. Weather radios are inexpensive and can
wake a person in the event a storm should happen while a person is asleep.
There are also several text messaging services to inform citizens of potential storms. Labette County has a
service that you can register for by either calling Brandy at 620-795-2565 or by logging on at
www.labettecounty.com and click on the green tab that says "Emergency Alert Button Sign-up". Local
television stations have this option as well.
