Fair Housing Month
April is designated as Fair Housing Month.
Fair Housing month was established to help make individuals aware of their rights
in regards to the Fair Housing Act.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, color, religion,
sex, national origin, disability or Family status. Although the Act covers most housing
there are some exemptions.
It is prohibited to refuse to rent or sell housing, set different terms or conditions, deny a
dwelling, falsely deny housing is available for inspection, sale or rent as well as other actions
based on discriminating factors such as race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or Family Status.
In addition it is illegal for anyone to threaten, coerce, intimidate or interfere with anyone exercising a
fair housing right.
If you think your rights have been violated, or if you have questions you can contact your Fair Housing
Representative, Cheri Peine, at 620-795-4433
