Local Senior Citizens May Apply to Receive Checks
for use at Local Farmers Markets in Labette County

PARSONS, KS --- The Kansas Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program will provide low-income seniors with $30 of
benefits for use during the 2012 harvest season to purchase fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits,
vegetables, herbs and honey at local farmers markets between June 1 and October 15, 2012. The Kansas
Department of Health and Environment is collaborating with the Department of Social Rehabilitation Services and
regional and local Area Agencies on Aging to identify and distribute the food checks to eligible seniors. 

To be eligible to receive Senior Farmers’ Market checks, seniors must meet the criteria below:

·         Age – person must be 60 years old or older on the day of issuance

·         Income level – Individual annual gross income (i.e. before taxes are withheld) must fall at or
          below $20,665 ($1,723/month)

·         Limit one voucher per household

Applications for the Kansas Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program will be available beginning May 4th at the
Southeast KS Area Agency on Aging, 1 W Ash, Chanute.

Seniors may apply for this program in Parsons on May 15 from 4 to 5:30. p.m. at the Parsons Farmers Market, just
south of the Swimming Pool at Forest Park. After May 15 if vouchers are still available, Seniors can go to the second
floor of the Municipal Building and inquire. Eligible Parsons Housing Authority residents should contact Karen Madden
at 421-7040.

Currently, there are funds to serve the first 50 people who apply and are eligible. Applicants will be served on a

Farmers who have been certified to participate in the program may accept Senior Farmers’ Market checks. Any
