Public Storm Shelters

The community safe rooms at the Oswego Junior-Senior High School and Neosho Heights will be available to the mem-bers of the community during tornado warnings or severe weather events with wind speeds predicted to be in excess of 75 mph. and/or any time the tornado warning sirens have been activated. The community safe rooms are constructed in compliance with FEMA stand-ards. These community safe rooms are designated to with-stand the wind speeds generat-ed by an EF-5 tornado.

The community safe rooms are owned and provided by USD 504 first and foremost to pro-tect district students and staff members. In the event of a storm warning during regular school operating hours, com-munity members will have lim-ited access to these facilities insofar as space permits.

At times school is not in session, both facilities will be available to the public. Care shall be taken by all who use the facility during a weather event to protect and secure school property, equip-ment and materials. Public ac-cess to the Neosho Heights facil-ity shall be through the double doors located in the walkway between the main school build-ing and the storm shelter build-ing. A sidewalk for this entrance extends from the curved drive-way in front of the main build-ing to the double doors in the walkway. Primary public access to the Junior-Senior High School will be through a single door located on the south side of the junior high addition. There will be a sidewalk from the parking lot to this entry door. No pets allowed. Only Certified service animals will be permitted. Read the newletter here.
